Introduction
For children, play is a vital part of growth and development. Research shows that beyond pleasure, the purpose of active play is to provide stimulation for proper perceptual, sensorimotor and neural development, executive (planning and decision making) and regulatory functions, as well as language, physical and social development. With children's increasingly sedentary lifestyles and lack of active, outdoor play, children's airway and oral functions are compromised.
Working together, specialists in pediatric oral health and development, speech pathology and oral-myofunctional therapy have developed educational material, patient exercises and recommendations for playtime to educate parents and caregivers about the importance of play and to provide tools to prevent airway and oral dysfunction and support optimal growth and development.
Learning About the Importance of Play!
To help educate parents and caregivers about the importance of play--especially physical play--we have prepared a presentation that visitors our website can view here, download, or print. Learning objectives include:
- Identifying risk factors and or development barriers for due to children’s lack of physical play in today’s society.
- Describe benefits of gross motor, sensory-motor and fine motor play as foundations for optimal airway and oral function as they relate to the craniofacial complex and cranial nerve integration.
